Andrew The fresh air of Kandy is a welcome treat. In tsunami-affected areas, the air is often filled with acrid smoke from the smoldering piles of burning debris. We are also relieved to not be surrounded by devastation. Nithila, the owner of the guest house, tells us that even in Kandy, far from the coast, his business is down. The tsunami has affected the entire island of Sri Lanka. It has even, I muse, affected the village in Nepal where Annette and I were to teach English. We spend the morning with Mondo Challenge volunteers who are teaching English in the area. It’s useful to compare notes. We agree that letting go of our assumptions about efficiency and effectiveness is the key to maintaining equanimity in our volunteer work. In the afternoon we run errands: a haircut for me (when did my hair get so gray?), digital photos emailed to Patrick, a sarong for Annette. A parade of monks, drummers, elderly women, and men carrying large placards files solemnly down the main street. The march is to commemorate the bombing seven years earlier of the local Buddhist temple by the Tamil Tigers. The placards display photos of the people who were killed. In the evening we discuss Nithila’s ideas for providing support to children in the affected areas. He would like to sponsor the annual expenses of ten children who lost one or both parents, and who are living with relatives and host families in their communities on the coast. I ask his wife Indra, who runs a preschool at the guest house, for her ideas about play areas and equipment. |
